Things to do in Kakadu
Last reviewed · verify live conditions with Parks Australia
Most first visits revolve around respectful Ubirr sunset and the Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) circuit, with a Yellow Water cruise or Bowali / Warradjan as the heat-smart alternative. Southern 4WD sites are a different sport — only when open. Jim Jim and Twin Falls are closed for all of 2026. Do not try to collect every attraction on a first visit.

Day one rule
Pick one primary experience (usually Ubirr sunset or Burrungkuy). Do not collect every site on a first Darwin-started afternoon.
Heat / croc bail-out
Cultural centres, a cruise or a short lookout beat a forced 4WD plunge-pool day in 40°C. Bail-outs are competence.

Southern 4WD: Maguk is listed Open with crocodile risk; Gunlom has no bottom-pool swim. Jim Jim and Twin are not a 2026 option.
