Where you start
Anbangbang Billabong picnic / walk area
Signed picnic and walk precinct near Burrungkuy / Nawurlandja. Part of the walk, including the path to picnic tables, is listed as wheelchair accessible. Water levels can close or stage the loop — check the Access Report, not last year’s blog.
How to get there
- Same sealed approach as Burrungkuy (Nourlangie). Park pass required.
- Gates for this precinct are listed 7 am–7 pm. Read the Access Report for partial openings after rain or in the build-up / wet.
- No public transport. Fuel at Jabiru or Cooinda.
How to do it (step by step)
- Walk the signed 2.5 km loop if it is fully open. If only a stage is open, enjoy that stage — do not push past flood or closure markers.
- Stay back from the water. Saltwater crocodiles use billabongs. This is a viewing walk.
- Bring binoculars. Official notes include magpie geese, pygmy geese, egrets, jacanas, cormorants, corellas and red-tailed black cockatoos among many others.
- Picnic at signed tables after the walk. Then add Nawurlandja or Burrungkuy only if heat and gate time remain.
What to expect
Parks Australia lists a 2.5 km Grade 2 loop, about an hour, through savanna woodland and paperbark around a bird-rich billabong with Burrungkuy behind it. It is the calm pair to the art circuit, not a second headline walk.
Public cultural notes on the official page refer to creation-era badbong (short-eared rock wallaby) travelling through this country and to Bininj use of plants in these habitats. This guide stops there.
Billabong rules
A still billabong is not a swimming invitation. Estuarine crocodiles use Kakadu waterways year-round. Stay on the path, stay back from the edge, and keep children close.
Dry-season access can open in stages depending on water levels. [VERIFY] the Kakadu Access Report the morning you go.
Heat, water and crocodile kit: see the gear hub after the Access Report. Amazon searches live there only — not on this walk page.

Extra tips
- Early morning and late afternoon for birds and cooler air.
- Pair with Nawurlandja lookout or Burrungkuy galleries — one extra, not both plus a long highway.
- Partial loop after rain is still a good hour. [VERIFY] Access Report.
Often paired with Nawurlandja— only if energy, heat and the Access Report allow.
