Do not pair: Do not pair Nawurlandja sunset with Ubirr sunset the same evening. Pick one lookout. Do not treat this climb as a substitute for closed Barrk.

Turnaround: If the first 50 metres of rock already feel wrong, reverse. The billabong loop is the successful demotion. Spoken clock-time before you leave the car: be down with gate margin.

  • Sitting sunset on the outlier until the 7 pm gate is a rumour, then reverse-climbing slick rock in the dark.
  • Adding Nawurlandja after Burrungkuy plus Ubirr on a Darwin day-trip because “it is only 300 metres.”

Not walked — planning from official Parks Australia walk pages and the Kakadu Access Report. Not a field diary.

Where you start

Nawurlandja lookout track, Burrungkuy precinct

Signed short climb near Anbangbang Billabong. This is a one-way listed distance of 300 metres — you return the same way. Gates 7 am–7 pm. Do not confuse it with the longer Burrungkuy gallery walk.

How to get there

  1. Same sealed Burrungkuy / Anbangbang approach from Jabiru. Park pass required.
  2. Gates 7 am–7 pm daily. [VERIFY] Access Report.
  3. Park in signed areas only.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Walk early or late. The climb is short and steep on rock.
  2. At the top, look across savanna to Burrungkuy and the escarpment. Sit, then reverse the same slope.
  3. Sunset is popular — leave enough light and gate margin to get down.
  4. Do not continue off-track along the outlier.

What to expect

Parks Australia lists Nawurlandja as 0.3 km one way, about 40 minutes, Grade 3 — a short steep rock climb to views across Anbangbang Billabong to Burrungkuy and the Arnhem Land escarpment. You return the same way. It is a lookout, not a plateau day.

The payoff is orientation: you see why Burrungkuy sits where it does. The cost is heat on bare sandstone and a 7 pm precinct gate that does not care about your last photo.

How this walk actually fails

Failure one: treating 300 metres as “quick” after a melted Burrungkuy morning, with empty bottles. Short and steep still cooks people.

Failure two: sunset linger without a reverse-clock, then a dark descent on polished rock and a locked gate. Confirm on-site signs — official lists win over this page.

Heat, water and crocodile kit: see the gear hub after the Access Report. Amazon searches live there only — not on this walk page.

Extra tips

  • Pair after Anbangbang Billabong if legs are willing.
  • Footwear with grip matters more than fitness bragging — polished rock after rain is slick.
  • This is not Barrk and not the Burrungkuy gallery circuit.

Often paired with Anbangbang Billabong— only if energy, heat and the Access Report allow.
