Burrungkuy (Nourlangie), Anbangbang & Nawurlandja

Stone-country outlier west of the Arnhem Land escarpment: Anbangbang gallery, Kunwarddewardde lookout, a bird-rich billabong loop, and the short Nawurlandja climb. Gates 7 am–7 pm. Barrk Sandstone Walk is closed at Traditional Owner request.

  • Best for: Rock-art circuit, escarpment views, easier billabong walking
  • Time: 2 hours for Burrungkuy alone; 4–6 hours to pair billabong and Nawurlandja honestly
  • Sealed park roads from the Jabiru / Kakadu Highway corridor. About a half-day to a full cool-hours day if you pair gallery + billabong + Nawurlandja without melting. Gates 7 am–7 pm. No public transport. Fuel at Jabiru or Cooinda.

What Burrungkuy is for

Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) is the inland cultural counterweight to Ubirr: an outlier of the stone country with public galleries that Parks Australia describes as documenting life from deep time through first contact. Come for Anbangbang, stay for the escarpment view if the heat allows, and use the billabong as the calm hour.

Joint management with Bininj/Mungguy Traditional Owners is not a footnote. Stay on the path. Don’t make up stories about the paintings. Ranger activities in the dry season are how you go deeper.

Gallery circuit vs lookout vs Barrk

The official Burrungkuy walk is 1.5 km return, two hours, Grade 3. The main gallery is listed year-round and wheelchair accessible. Kunwarddewardde lookout is steps and uneven rock. Decide at the shelter, not on Instagram.

Barrk is a different walk entirely — 12 km, six hours, Difficult, via Nanguluwurr — and it is closed at Traditional Owner request. This area page will not tease it as a “if you have energy” upgrade. Closed is closed. [VERIFY] Access Report only to confirm.

Anbangbang Billabong and Nawurlandja

The billabong loop is 2.5 km, about an hour, Grade 2, through paperbark and woodland. Birds are the payoff. Water levels can stage the opening — [VERIFY] Access Report. Crocodiles use billabongs.

Nawurlandja is 0.3 km one way, about 40 minutes, Grade 3: a short steep rock climb to a wide view of billabong, Burrungkuy and escarpment. Morning or late afternoon. Reverse the same slope before the 7 pm gate.

Heat and the 7 pm gate

Exposed sandstone plus tropical heat is how easy-looking days go medical. Walk early. Carry 1 L+ per person per hour. In extreme heat, treat “before 11 am” as the walking window and spend the middle of the day in Jabiru or Cooinda shade.

The 7 am–7 pm gate is a logistics tool. A late lookout is fine with a timed descent. A second walk after a slow gallery hour may not be.

Where to base

Jabiru is the practical overnight for this precinct (Bowali, fuel, food, the crocodile-shaped Mercure hotel as a known landmark). Cooinda works if you are pairing the next day with Yellow Water. Park campgrounds are first-come, separate fees, often non-potable water — [VERIFY] on arrival.

FAQ — Burrungkuy

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Is Burrungkuy the same as Nourlangie?

Burrungkuy is the name used on current Parks Australia pages; Nourlangie is the widely known older visitor name for the same precinct. Follow today’s official signs and Access Report.

Can I do Barrk Sandstone from here?

Not while it is closed at Traditional Owner request. Do not start the 12 km loop. Use the 1.5 km Burrungkuy walk instead. [VERIFY] Access Report for any official change.

How long do I need?

Two hours covers the main walk if you do not rush the gallery. Add an hour for the billabong and another for Nawurlandja only if the cool window still exists.
