Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) walk

A 1.5 km Grade 3 return through public shelters and galleries — including Anbangbang — to Kunwarddewardde lookout over the Arnhem Land escarpment. Gates 7 am–7 pm. Morning or late afternoon. Pair with Anbangbang Billabong or Nawurlandja when open.

  • Grade 3
  • ~2 hours
  • 1.5 km return
  • Effort: moderate
  • Best for: World Heritage rock art, Anbangbang gallery, escarpment lookout

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change. Always verify current conditions, fees and closures with Parks Australia / Bowali Visitor Centre (08 8938 1120) and the Kakadu Access Report.

Official Parks Australia info (verify status)

Do not pair: Do not stack Burrungkuy morning + Ubirr sunset + a Yellow Water cruise + Gunlom on one Darwin day. Burrungkuy plus Anbangbang or Nawurlandja is the honest pair — Ubirr is a different afternoon.

Turnaround: Turn around at Anbangbang Shelter if the lookout steps look wrong for anyone in the group. That is still the World Heritage visit. Reverse the same track before 7 pm.

  • Treating 7 pm gate close as a suggestion, then meeting a locked car park after “one more photo.”
  • Using Burrungkuy as a warm-up for Barrk Sandstone while that walk is closed at Traditional Owner request.

Not walked — planning from official Parks Australia walk pages and the Kakadu Access Report. Not a field diary.

Where you start

Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) car park

Dedicated signed car park for the Burrungkuy site. Gates open 7 am and close 7 pm daily — plan the exit, not only the entry. The walk to the main gallery is listed year-round and wheelchair accessible; the lookout adds steps and uneven rock. Confirm on-site.

How to get there

  1. Park pass required (Kakadu only — not the NT Parks Visitor Pass). Purchase online or at Bowali / listed sales points.
  2. From Jabiru: sealed roads toward Burrungkuy / Nourlangie. From Darwin: Stuart then Arnhem Highway to the Kakadu sealed network, then follow park signs. No public transport inside the park.
  3. Read the Access Report the morning you go. Site gates are 7 am–7 pm. Do not plan a sunset sit that strands you after lock-up.
  4. Fuel at Jabiru or Cooinda before you rely on a long southern loop the same day.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Arrive in the cool of the morning or late afternoon. Midday on exposed sandstone is a heat mistake.
  2. Walk the signed 1.5 km return. The main public site is the Anbangbang gallery and shelter. Stay on the path. Do not touch art.
  3. Continue to Kunwarddewardde lookout only if energy, water and the 7 pm gate still have margin. The lookout is steps and uneven rock, not the wheelchair gallery.
  4. If a dry-season ranger rock-art activity is listed, join it — included in the park pass when scheduled. Confirm at Bowali or on kakadu.gov.au.
  5. Exit before gates close. Optional same-area pair: Anbangbang Billabong loop or Nawurlandja lookout — only if heat and time remain.

What to expect

Burrungkuy (also widely known as Nourlangie) is one of the reasons Kakadu is World Heritage-listed for cultural values. Parks Australia describes a 1.5 km return, Grade 3, about two hours, through public shelters and galleries to Kunwarddewardde lookout.

The main public concentration is the Anbangbang gallery and shelter. Official visitor information notes creation-being imagery such as Namarrkon (Lightning Man), contact-period sailing ships, and x-ray paintings of animals and fish. This guide does not add unofficial story. Listen to rangers and read signs.

The walk to the main gallery is listed as open year-round and wheelchair accessible. The lookout is a different product: steps, uneven rock, heat. Decide at the gallery, not in the car park under optimism.

Day shape and logistics

Best windows: morning, or late afternoon. Combine with the easy Anbangbang Billabong loop or the short Nawurlandja lookout if you keep the heat budget honest. Dry-season ranger rock-art activities are free with the park pass when listed — confirm dates at Bowali.

Gates open 7 am and close 7 pm daily. That is a real closing time. A late-afternoon lookout is fine if you walk down with margin. A “just one more photo” after 6:30 pm is how people meet a locked gate.

Start at the dedicated Burrungkuy car park. Carry water from the first step. Standard day walks are covered by the Kakadu park pass — no extra walk permit. Camping, if you stay nearby, is a completely separate fee system ([VERIFY] current campground rates on arrival or via Bowali). Overnight or remote camping outside designated areas needs an extra permit.

Hazards that actually matter

Heat on exposed sections is the usual medical story. Carry 1 L+ per person per hour in heat. Parks Australia heat guidance for longer stone-country walks is walk before 11 am when temperatures are extreme — treat that as culture for this shorter walk too in the tropical summer.

Uneven sandstone, steps to the lookout, and slick rock after rain. Stay on the marked path — this is a cultural site, not a scramble park.

Crocodiles are not the headline on the rock itself, but they are the headline at nearby billabongs. Do not leave the art circuit for an unsigned swim. Anbangbang Billabong is a viewing and bird walk, not a swimming hole.

Reverse, bail-outs and what not to add

Short loop, easy return from the galleries to the car park. If the lookout steps look like a bad idea for anyone in the group, turn around at Anbangbang. That is still the World Heritage visit.

Site closes at 7 pm — the bail-out is time, not an alternate ridge. Reverse the same track. Do not contour around the outlier to “find the car”.

Do not use this page as a reason to start the Barrk Sandstone Walk. Barrk is a 12 km, ~6 hour, Difficult loop and is closed at the request of Traditional Owners ([VERIFY] Access Report for any change). Closed means stay off it.

Heat, water and crocodile kit: see the gear hub after the Access Report. Amazon searches live there only — not on this walk page.

Extra tips

  • Morning for cooler rock and quieter galleries; late afternoon for light on sandstone — not both plus a long drive in one melted day.
  • Main gallery can be the whole walk. The lookout is optional Grade 3 effort.
  • You may see barrk (black wallaroo) or chestnut-quilled rock-pigeons — watch, do not approach or feed.
  • Pair with Anbangbang Billabong or Nawurlandja. Do not stack Barrk Sandstone — that walk is closed at Traditional Owner request ([VERIFY] Access Report).
  • Always verify Access Report / kakadu.gov.au / Bowali (08 8938 1120).

Often paired with Anbangbang Billabong— only if energy, heat and the Access Report allow.
