Gunlom lookout walk

Access Report (20 Aug 2026): Gunlom is open with risks. Gunlom Road is high-clearance 4WD only. Strictly no access or swimming in the bottom plunge pool while crocodile management continues. The lookout climb is a separate decision from swimming — obey fences and signs.

  • Grade 3 · high-clearance 4WD · bottom pool closed
  • ~30 minutes listed · allow more in heat
  • 0.5 km one way (lookout climb)
  • Effort: moderate
  • Best for: Southern escarpment lookout when you accept 4WD-only access and no bottom-pool swim

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change. Always verify current conditions, fees and closures with Parks Australia / Bowali Visitor Centre (08 8938 1120) and the Kakadu Access Report.

Official Parks Australia info (verify status)

Do not pair: Do not pair Gunlom with Maguk, Jim Jim or Twin Falls. Maguk is listed Open with ongoing crocodile management (11 Sept 2026) — that is still its own 4WD day. Jim Jim / Twin are closed for all of 2026. One southern site is the whole day.

Turnaround: If the Access Report, hire contract or on-site fence says no, the picnic viewing path is the visit — or you turn around on sealed Kakadu Highway. The lookout is not a reason to enter a closed pool.

  • Driving a 2WD hire car onto Gunlom Road because a photo showed a pool, then discovering the contract and the crocodile signs at the same time.
  • Treating Gunlom as a same-day add-on after Ubirr sunset, or stacking it with Maguk because the map looks close.

Not walked — planning from official Parks Australia walk pages and the Kakadu Access Report. Not a field diary.

Where you start

Gunlom picnic / day-use area

Mary River region, southern Kakadu. Official lookout walk: 0.5 km one way, 30 minutes, Grade 3. The picnic area and a short paperbark path to a plunge-pool viewing area are a different, easier layer. Confirm 4WD / high-clearance rules on the Access Report.

How to get there

  1. Often high-clearance 4WD only on Gunlom Road — [VERIFY] Access Report (open with risks has been a live official wording).
  2. From Kakadu Highway toward the south / Pine Creek side. Fuel before you leave sealed road. Stay overnight options are commonly thought of from Pine Creek or park campgrounds ([VERIFY] camping fees and open status separately).
  3. Jim Jim & Twin Falls area is closed all of 2026 — do not add those sites to a Gunlom day.
  4. Mobile coverage is listed at Gunlom campground. Treat the walk and pools as still capable of dropping out.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Read today’s Access Report and the signs at the picnic area before you walk up.
  2. If the bottom plunge pool is closed to swimming or access, obey that. Viewing from a signed path is not a wade.
  3. Climb the steep lookout track. Another short section reaches upper rock pools and a small waterfall when that alignment is open. Polished rock is extremely slippery when wet.
  4. Reverse the same track. Use picnic-area gas barbecues only as provided. Collecting firewood rules are on official pages — gas preferred.

4WD and swim status — [VERIFY]

Do not copy an old photograph of people in the bottom pool as a plan. Official notices have stated no access or swimming in the bottom Gunlom plunge pool while listing high-clearance 4WD only on Gunlom Road.

The lookout walk can be open when swimming is not. Those are different decisions. Parks Australia / Bowali / Access Report are the only live sources.

Heat, water and crocodile kit: see the gear hub after the Access Report. Amazon searches live there only — not on this walk page.

Extra tips

  • [VERIFY] 4WD, GVM limits, and swim status the same morning.
  • Upper pools are not automatically “croc free” in your head — only official survey and signage count.
  • Path to the first viewing spot is listed wheelchair accessible — the lookout climb is not.

Often paired with Maguk— only if energy, heat and the Access Report allow.
