Where you start

Do not start — closed at Traditional Owner request

When it is legally open again, this is a full-day stone-country loop from the Burrungkuy / Nanguluwurr area with a steep climb onto the plateau. Right now the official status is closed at Traditional Owner request. This page exists so visitors do not follow an old map onto a closed cultural walk.

How to get there

  1. Do not drive to a “Barrk trailhead” expecting a walk. Visit Burrungkuy galleries, Anbangbang Billabong or Nawurlandja instead — if those are open on the Access Report.
  2. If official status ever changes, re-read the Parks Australia Barrk page end-to-end before considering it. Until then, stay off the loop.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Do not do this walk while it is closed.
  2. If you arrived hoping for a big sandstone day: switch to the 1.5 km Burrungkuy walk and Nawurlandja. That is the respectful, legal plan.
  3. Never follow a GPX file, blog or social post onto a walk closed at Traditional Owner request.

Closed — do not promote as open

Parks Australia: Barrk Sandstone Walk is closed at the request of Traditional Owners. This unofficial guide will not give you a “how to sneak it” narrative. Respect the request.

When (if) it reopens, it is a 12 km loop, about 6 hours, Difficult, typically discussed as a January–October access pattern with an early start, 3 L+ water culture, and a visit to Nanguluwurr. All of that is historical / future planning only until the Access Report says otherwise. [VERIFY].

Heat, water and crocodile kit: see the gear hub after the Access Report. Amazon searches live there only — not on this walk page.

Map (orientation)

Pin may be approximate. Confirm trailheads, parking and track status on the Access Report and kakadu.gov.au before you drive.

Extra tips

  • Closed means closed. [VERIFY] Access Report only to confirm — not to hunt a loophole.
  • Nanguluwurr has a separate shorter art-site walk when that page lists it open — still verify; do not use it as a back door onto Barrk.
  • Heat on a 12 km stone-country loop is serious (1 L+ per person per hour, before 11 am starts) — academic until it reopens.
