Jabiru town & Bowali Visitor Centre
The service town and official orientation hub inside the northern Kakadu sealed network: Bowali Visitor Centre, fuel, food, phones, and the well-known crocodile-shaped hotel. Start here before you chase sunsets or 4WD tracks.
- Best for: Orientation, park-pass questions, fuel, heat recovery, overnight base for Ubirr and Burrungkuy
- Time: 1–2 hours for Bowali + town logistics; overnight for a two-site Kakadu
- On the sealed Arnhem Highway approach from Darwin (~3 hours). Katherine is roughly 3 hours the other way via Kakadu Highway. Jabiru is the refuel-and-reset, not a substitute for Ubirr or Yellow Water.

Why competent trips touch Bowali
Kakadu is almost 20,000 km². The Access Report, heat, crocodiles and three separate fee systems punish people who treat it like a suburban national-park picnic ground. Bowali Visitor Centre (08 8938 1120) is the official human version of that report.
Ask about today’s road closures, ranger talks, and whether Ubirr, Burrungkuy gates and southern tracks match your plan. Then buy or confirm the Kakadu park pass if you have not already.
Park pass — system A only
Kakadu park pass: 7 days, Kakadu only. Dry season (15 May–31 October): Adult $40 / Child $20 / Family $100 / Concession $30. Tropical Summer (1 November–14 May): Adult $25 / Child $12.50 / Family $65 / Concession $19. Official June 2026 announcement: visits 1 July–31 October 2026 are charged at Tropical Summer rates.
Free for NT residents with proof. Concession categories are defined by Parks Australia — don’t assume you qualify. Buy at book.parksaustralia.gov.au/passes/kakadu/ or Bowali and other listed outlets. 100% of pass revenue returns to the park. This site never affiliates park fees.
Camping fees are system B (separate, usually first-come, example Mardukal adults $15 / children $7.50 / families $38 — do not treat that as every campground; [VERIFY]). Overnight/remote permits are system C.
Phones, coverage and emergencies
Coverage (Connecting Kakadu) is listed at Jabiru, Cooinda, Bowali, Gunlom campground, Gungurul, Mary River Ranger Station, Northern Information Bay, Burrungkuy rock-art site, and Maguk campground (2 km from the falls). Remote country still has none.
000 needs a path to a network. Emergency+ is useful where coverage exists. For southern 4WD or remote days, a satellite messenger is worth packing. Do not assume a particular carrier map beyond those listed sites.
Staying in Jabiru
Jabiru is the search pin for Ubirr and Burrungkuy days. Commercial hotels (including the crocodile-shaped Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel) and other rooms are ordinary bookings — not park camping.
Safest swimming here is a hotel or town pool, not a billabong that looks quiet.
Where to go next
North: Ubirr and Cahills. South-west: Burrungkuy. Further south on sealed Kakadu Highway: Cooinda / Yellow Water, then Mary River 4WD country if open. Katherine / Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) is a separate park on a separate pass logic — do not expect a Kakadu pass to cover it.

Where is Kakadu relative to Darwin and Jabiru?

Yes — Bowali is a listed sales point. Online purchase in advance is preferred. Still carry proof. NT Parks Visitor Pass is not valid.
Is the Crocodile Hotel inside the park experience?
