Darwin – Kakadu – Katherine overview

3–5 days (self-drive) · Best for: Sealed-highway road trip · first Top End circuit

A realistic sealed-corridor overview: Darwin, Jabiru / Ubirr / Burrungkuy, Cooinda / Yellow Water, then Katherine / Nitmiluk. Not a Jim Jim year.

Darwin to Jabiru is about three hours on sealed highways (Stuart then Arnhem). Jabiru to Katherine via the Kakadu Highway is the usual southern exit. Fuel at Jabiru and Cooinda; refuel often. There is no public transport inside the park.

Give Kakadu two nights if you can — one cultural day and one wetlands day. A single Darwin day-trip can only honestly do one of those. Stacking Ubirr, Burrungkuy and Maguk on the inbound afternoon is the usual first-visit failure.

Buy the Kakadu park pass before you leave Darwin. It does not cover Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) or Litchfield. The NT Parks Visitor Pass is not valid in Kakadu. Official camping is a separate first-come system.

Jim Jim and Twin Falls are closed for all of 2026. Maguk is listed Open with crocodile risk as of 11 Sept 2026 — still optional 4WD, not a Darwin add-on. Always verify the Access Report and NT Road Report the morning you drive.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on the Kakadu Access Report and kakadu.gov.au before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. There is no single “Kakadu entry fee.”

Timeline

  1. Night before Day 0

    Pass, screenshots, no Jim Jim

Buy the Kakadu park pass online. Screenshot the Access Report and NT Road Report. Pack heat kit even for sealed days. Do not plan Jim Jim or Twin Falls as open destinations.

  2. Day 0

    Darwin arrival

Airport hub and urban services. Sleep Darwin if you landed late. A same-day smash to Ubirr after a long-haul flight is how people hit Magela Creek tired. Optional Litchfield is a different park on a different day — see litchfieldguide.com.au.

  3. Day 1

    Drive in + one commitment

Leave Darwin with a morning buffer. Arnhem Highway is listed Open on the 20 Aug 2026 Access Report — still drive to the conditions and check the NT Road Report. After the three-hour transfer, one commitment only: Burrungkuy or a booked Yellow Water cruise. Sleep Jabiru or Cooinda.

  4. Day 2

    The other classic

If yesterday was wetlands, do Burrungkuy morning + Ubirr sunset. If yesterday was art, do Yellow Water + Warradjan. Heat-aware start. Midday indoor. This is the Kakadu you came for.

  5. Optional extra night

Do not invent a third “must”

A third Kakadu night is rest, Bowali questions, or a second cruise — not Maguk-plus-Gunlom-plus-Cahills. If you have a high-clearance 4WD and a green Access Report, one southern site is a different itinerary, not an add-on hour.

  6. Day 3

South to Katherine (or back to Darwin)

Kakadu Highway is sealed but still a fatigue drive. Check the Access Report if you hoped for a southern 4WD detour — most visitors should skip it on a through-day. Fuel before you leave Cooinda / Jabiru.

  7. Katherine night

    Nitmiluk is a different park

Katherine Gorge is Nitmiluk — different land manager, different fees. See nitmiluknationalpark.com.au. A Kakadu pass does not cover it. Do not expect the same crocodile or camping rules to copy-paste.

Packing

  • 1 L+ water per person per hour
  • Electrolyte sachets
  • Sun hat + SPF50
  • Insect repellent
  • Sturdy shoes — sandstone steps, not flip-flops
  • Lightweight long sleeves
  • Offline Access Report + NT Road Report screenshots
  • Simple first-aid / blister care
  • Headlamp if any Ubirr sunset is on the clock
  • Offline maps + power bank
  • Park pass + Access Report screenshots on the phone

Optional kit searches: gear hub. Amazon lives there only.

Parking & access tips

  • Fill up in Darwin, then again at Jabiru or Cooinda. Do not assume every roadhouse is open [VERIFY].
  • No shop or fuel at Mary River Roadhouse.
  • Arnhem and Kakadu Highways listed Open (20 Aug 2026 Access Report). Still check NT Road Report as well as the Access Report.
  • Do not start a 4WD spur on a through-day to Katherine.
  • Book or at least choose Jabiru vs Cooinda before you leave Darwin so the first night is not a 5 pm scramble.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Jim Jim / Twin (closed 2026)
  • Arnhem Land without a permit
  • Doing Ubirr, Burrungkuy and Maguk on the inbound day
  • Litchfield and Kakadu on the same clock
  • A southern 4WD detour on the Katherine through-day

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • First Top End self-drives with 3–5 days and a 2WD on sealed highways
  • People flying into Darwin who will not try to “do Kakadu” as a day-trip plus Katherine
  • Groups willing to give Kakadu two nights

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • If you only have one Kakadu night, pick wetlands or art — not both plus a gorge
  • If Magela Creek is closed, Ubirr is off that day
  • If someone wants Jim Jim, the 2026 answer is no
  • If you are tired on the Katherine through-day, skip every unsealed turn-off

Sister parks (different fees)

  • Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) is a different land manager and fee system — see nitmiluknationalpark.com.au.
  • Litchfield is a Darwin-side waterfall park, not a Kakadu substitute — see litchfieldguide.com.au.
  • A Kakadu park pass does not cover either.

  • Ubirr walkKakadu’s signature short cultural loop: public rock-art galleries on a formed 1 km circuit, then an optional steeper climb to the Nadab lookout. Late afternoon is the classic plan. Alcohol is prohibited. Ranger-guided talks are included in the park pass.
  • Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) walkA 1.5 km Grade 3 return through public shelters and galleries — including Anbangbang — to Kunwarddewardde lookout over the Arnhem Land escarpment. Gates 7 am–7 pm. Morning or late afternoon. Pair with Anbangbang Billabong or Nawurlandja when open.
